New
York, NY, Sept. 26, 2001--Barnard College will
bring together alumnae and prospective students
and their families for a forum on Art in
Society in Los Angeles on October 21.
Suz
and Michael Rubel, whose daughter Katie is a
Barnard sophomore, will host the event at their
Los Angeles home. Prospective students and their
families will have the opportunity to participate
in an admissions workshop, followed by a panel
discussion attended by Barnard alumnae. Guests
at the event will have the opportunity to view
the Rubels' private art collection.
Lauren
Graham '88, star of television's "Gilmore Girls,"
will co-host the admissions workshop with Jennifer
Fondiller '88, dean of admissions.
The
forum's featured speakers will offer diverse
perspectives on the topic of contemporary art
and society, including curatorial, historical,
and artistic views. Stephanie Barron, a 1972
graduate of Barnard College, is vice president
of public programs and senior curator of modern
and contemporary art at the Los Angeles County
Museum of Arts (LACMA). She will speak from
the curator's standpoint and also moderate the
panel. Michael Rubel, general counsel at the
talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA),
and a noted art collector, will offer a collector's
perspective, while Joan Snitzer, director of
visual arts and senior lecturer at Barnard,
will present an historical view. Critically
acclaimed photographer Judy Fiskin--whose work
is featured at LACMA and other institutions,
as well as Rubel's collection--will represent
the artist's point of view.
After the panel, Barnard College President Judith
Shapiro will present an overview of the College
and its long-term strategic plan, followed by
a question and answer session.
The
pre-discussion admissions workshop will take
place at 2:00 p.m. Check-in for the panel discussion
is at 3:00 p.m. The program will be followed
by a reception. Alumnae and prospective students
