National President of NOW, Patricia Ireland, to speak at Barnard at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Patricia Ireland, the national president of the National Organization of Women, will speak at Brooks Living Room at Barnard College at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, about the November elections and to urge U.S. women to join the World March of Women 2000 on October 15, in Washington, D.C.
"When Patricia Ireland comes to campus, Barnard and Columbia students will have the chance to meet one of the most influential women in the world. The event is also helping to create a strong link and camaraderie between National NOW, NOW-NYC, and Barnard/Columbia NOW," said Danielle DiLeo, the Barnard student who organized the visit.
According to organizers of the World March of Women: "women from the United states and more than 155 countries and hundreds of thousands of U.S. feminists will join in solidarity in Washington, D.C. to demand equality between women and men, and to demand economic justice and an end to violence against women."
Patricia Ireland has been president of NOW since 1991, and is the author of "What Women Want." She is an outspoken feminist whose goals represent those of National Organization for Women, the largest feminist organization in the world.
NOW-NYC is the founding chapter of the organization, and has been leading New York City's feminists through grassroots mobilizations since 1966. The Barnard chapter of NOW was launched last year and is run by Barnard students who are committed to young women's participation in achieving equal rights.
