Through The Gates: Art at Barnard

If you're wondering about the sculpture that is sitting just through the gates in front of Barnard Hall — as well as another installation on Broadway at the crosswalk of 117th Street — wonder no more. The work is by Brooklyn-based sculptor Boaz Vaadia, and has made its way to Barnard and the surrounding area thanks to the efforts of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the Friends of Morningside Park, Barnard, and the artist himself, among others.
This seated figure — titled "Ze'ev" — was made in 1997 of bronze, bluestone, and boulder. Vaadia works primarily with these materials, as well as with slate and shingle — all collected from the immediate area surrounding his studio. "I work with nature as an equal partner. . . That's still the strongest thing I deal with today, that primal connection of man to earth," Vaadia has said. "It's in the materials I use, the environments I make and the way I work." The sculptures are made by handcarving each individual layer and stacking the layers until the piece is complete.
"Ze-ev" will greet Barnard's guests at the gates from now through January 2008
