New
York, N.Y., October 9, 2002 The Barnard College Theater
Department will present Fuente Ovejuna, Lope de Vegas
17th-century classic play of love and revenge, beginning
on October 11 at the Minor Latham Playhouse. This production
will be directed by Pels Professor of Theater Denny Partridge
with Senior Lecturer Steve Friedman. Technical direction
and lighting design are by Harry C. Rosenblum.
Fuente Ovejuna features the scenic design of Erik
Flatmo, visiting lecturer in Theater. Mr. Flatmo, who graduated
from Columbia College in 1997 with a degree in architecture,
holds an MFA in Scene Design from the Yale School of Drama.
A former resident designer for Marilyn Hornes Music
Academy of the West, he recently designed for the Drama
Leagues New Directions/New Works Festival in New York
City.
The performance of Fuente Ovejuna continues a long
history of Spanish Theater at Barnard. The plays costume
design, by Barnard Theater staff costumer Tracy Nishimoto,
includes pieces from the Barnard Spanish Departments
noteworthy costume collection. The first Spanish language
theater in New York City was founded at Barnard in the 1940s
by Professors Amelia Agostini de del Rio, Laura de los Rios
de Garcia Lorca, and Margarita Ucelay (de da Cal). Under
the direction of Professor Ucelay, students participated
in the sewing of the costumes and performed in plays alongside
faculty and professionals. One of the many performances
that took place in the Minor Latham Playhouse was New York
Citys first Spanish production of Garcia Lorcas
La Casa de Bernarda Alba in 1953.
Performances of Fuente Ovejuna will be held on Friday,
