Nobel Laureate Jody Williams to Speak at Barnard on Feminist Responses to Violence, Oct. 24

New York, NY, October 21, 2002— Nobel laureate Jody Williams will give a talk, titled "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Achievement: Responding to the Challenges of Conflict in Today’s World" as part of the Virginia C. Gildersleeve Lecture Series. The lecture, sponsored by the Barnard Center for Research on Women, will be held in the Julius S. Held Lecture Hall on Thursday, October 24, at 5:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Williams is the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize and coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Her work places her in a prime position to speak about the importance of coalitions as an effective tool in future efforts against violence.

In her presentation Williams will examine international efforts for disarmament and peace. She will help theorize feminist responses not only to war, but also to more intimate forms of violence: small arms disarmament, police brutality, hate crimes, and domestic violence.
