New
York, NY, October 21, 2002 Barnard College hosted
its annual Family Weekend, October 11-12, with a wide array
of programs and events, including panel discussions on college
life, a lunch with President Judith Shapiro, and a guided
tour of galleries in Chelsea.
Despite the wind and torrential rains, the campus was filled
with over 600 family members, friends and students, who
participated in the weekends comprehensive program
on campus and around New York City. Popular events included
"What is a First-Year Seminar?", where the guests
could experience a class taught by seminar professors; panels
discussing life as a first-year student; and the opportunity
to hear about issues affecting upper classmen, as well as
learn about internship opportunities in the New York area.
By far the most well-attended event was the luncheon with
President Shapiro. In addition to the presidents remarks,
a panel of recent graduates discussed how their experience
at Barnard prepared them for their careers and further education.
Other events included guided tours in the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, a visit to the Guggenheim and to art galleries in
Chelsea, a dance showcase of students work, and a
presentation of Fuente Ovejuna by the Theater Department.
