ARTIST'S
NEW MURAL IN MCINTOSH CENTER ONLY ONE OF SEVERAL
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
New
York, NY, October 25, 2001-- Senior artist Eve
Pomerantz has completed her 5-by-54-foot mural
on the east wall in Lower Level McIntosh. The
project, which began last spring in a contest
run by the College Activities Office, is intended
to express a range of emotions. The opening
for the mural will be on monday, October 29
at 7 p.m.
"I tried to convey a sense of camaraderie, trust,
and faith between different people, and I wanted
to express hope while also showing darkness
and struggle," Pomerantz recently told the Barnard
Bulletin.
Inspired
by the teachings of French mime Marcel Marceau,
Pomerantz worked to express human emotions,
the "conventions of character," through physical
forms and body language.
Pomerantz
began her study of art and form in earnest at
the age of 14 with renowned sculptor Greg Wyatt
CC '71. During her first year at Barnard, he
gave her the opportunity to create a sculpture
based on themes in William Shakespeare's King
Lear. The 3-foot-tall bronze sculpture is
now permanently on display in Shakespeare's
hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon in England.
With her art career just beginning, Pomerantz
plans to attend Marcel Marceau's Mime School
in Paris to "improve [her] art" after graduating
from Barnard in the spring.
