Barnard Student and Alumna Win Awards from
the New York Legal Aid Society
NEW YORK, N.Y. - A Barnard College student and
an alumna have received awards of recognition
from the Legal Aid Society at the 2000 Pro Bono
Awards and Law Firm Recognition Ceremony.
Romy Goldsmith '01 is the first college student
ever to win a prestigious Legal Aid Society Award.
As an intern in the Bronx Office of the Juvenile
Rights Division, Goldsmith successfully planned
a book drive to place books in the waiting rooms
of Juvenile Rights Offices, and mobilized clothing
contributions. She even enlisted her own mother
to assist with the painting of a mural in the
waiting room of the Bronx office. For these accomplishments
Goldsmith received the community service award.
Of her achievements at such a young age, Daniel
L. Greenberg, President and Attorney-In-Chief
stated, "This ceremony today recognizes the pro
bono contribution usually of the legal community.
It is rare that a college student is included.
It is a testament to Romy that she was nominated
for the award."
Elizabeth Hibbard, Social Worker Supervisor, Juvenile
Rights Division, added that Goldsmith "has been
a breath of fresh air. She came in, saw a need
and didn't stop." Goldsmith's parents stated,
"We are proud that Romy can carry on the Barnard
tradition of making a difference in our community.
Chief Judge of the Supreme Court Judith S. Kaye,
a 1958 Barnard graduate, said that when she called
around to find out about Romy she was told, "
JRD (Juvenile Rights Division) loves Romy."
The second Barnard recipient, Susan Hecht, a member
of the class of 1990, received an award with her
litigation team for successfully representing
a group of tenants devastated by a fire. As a
result of Hecht and her team's hard work the tenants
will receive a financially advantageous settlement
from the landlord of their burnt-out building.
The ceremony was held on October 2nd at the Legal
Aid Society headquarters.
