Barnard Dances at Miller, November 18-20

Barnard Dances at Miller presents works by four choreographers on November 18, 19, 20, 2004 at 8 PM at Miller Theatre, Broadway at West 116th Street, New York City.

Tickets are $15 and can be reserved (212 854-7799) or purchased at the Miller box office.

The repertory program features Marble Halls by Mark Morris.  This 1985 work, set to music by J.S. Bach, is for ten dancers.  Staged by founding Mark Morris Dance Group member Tina Fehlandt, the piece has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as "ineffable, organic beauty" that goes "beyond humor, allusiveness and invention."

Paul Taylor’s American modern dance classic work, Aureole premiered in 1962 for three women and two men. Called his “white ballet” and set to a Handel score, the work has been restaged for these performances by Taylor’s consummate dancer, Mary Cochran.

Two new works evidence Barnard’s continuing commitment in commissioning ensemble pieces by emerging choreographers:

Aszure Barton, Canadian choreographer and Artistic Director of ASzURe &Artists, has presented her work at many NYC venues as well as Jacob's Pillow and has been recognized for her "witty, inventive work that explores all physical potential" (Village Voice). Her new creation investigates the physical extremes that stretch our capacities to fall in love, go insane, be devastated, and kill.

Laveen Naidu, Director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem School, has choreographed a new ballet for 12 dancers.  The pointe piece examines the evolving process of layering in this collaboration of the dancers, and the choreographer, with composer Ramin Arjomand.

Janet Mansfield Soares is Artistic Director for Dances at Miller. Award-winning designer A.Christina Giannini is Costume Coordinator. Barnard’s resident lighting designer Rhonda Rubinson serves as Production Director.
