Photo Exhibit of Extraordinary NYC Public School Graduates Includes President Shapiro and Three Barnard Alumnae

President Judith Shapiro of Barnard and three alumnae of the College are part of the 2004 Honor Roll photo exhibit that pays tribute to extraordinary graduates of New York City public Schools.

President Shapiro, the first president of the College who attended New York City public schools, joins Barnard alumnae Susan A. Cole, president, Montclair State University (Class of '62); actress Cynthia Nixon, Class of 88; and singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega, Class of '81, on this year's Honor Roll.

Organized by Public Schools for the 21 st Century (PS21), a non-profit organization that promotes and celebrates New York State public schools, the photo exhibit will visit schools and other public spaces in the state.

The honorees, including a Nobel laureate, elected officials, business leaders, sports figures and other luminaries, gathered at an opening reception in New York City hosted by Harold McGraw III, Chairman, President and CEO The McGraw-Hill Companies, and public education advocate Valerie Rockefeller.   "Our public schools are the backbone of our communities, our economy and our democracy.   Too often, we take for granted the role public education plays," said Ms. Rockefeller.

•  John Liu , New York City Councilman

•  Joshua Lederberg , Nobel Prize Laureate

•  Serphin R. Maltese , New York State Senator

•  Richard D. Parsons , CEO, Time Warner

•  David Randolph , St. Cecilia Choir Conductor

•  Leonard Riggio , Chairman and Founder Barnes & Noble
