Barnard
Center for Research on Women Presents the 25th Scholar
and the Feminist Conference on "Next Wave Feminism:
Feminist Intersections and International Alliances"
March
16, 2000, New York, NY- The Barnard Center for Research
on Women will analyze the changing geography of
feminist politics in a one-day seminar "Next Wave
Feminism: Feminist Intersections and International
Alliances" on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m.
The
event, to be held at Barnard Hall, Barnard College,
117th and Broadway, marks the 25th anniversary of
The Scholar and the Feminist Conference which, for
a quarter century, has joined scholars and activists
in a day-long exploration of issues significant
to women's lives. Whether questioning the value
of single-sex education or analyzing representations
of women in film, the conference is widely recognized
as an important catalyst in the development of feminist
scholarship.
This
year, the conference brings together distinguished
panelists whose work depends upon interdisciplinary
and international coalitions to discuss the state
of feminism today, where it's going tomorrow, and
the progress that can be made by forging unexpected
connections.
Keynote
speaker is Janet R. Jakobsen, director of the Barnard
Center for Research on Women and author of Working
Alliances the Politics of Difference: Diversity
and Feminist Ethics. Panelists include;
- Caren Grown, senior program officer for programs
on human and community development and global
security and sustainability at the John D. and
Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
- Joo-Hyun Kang, executive director of Audre Lorde
Project - Patricia McFadden, program officer at
the Southern African Research Institute for Policy
Studies
- Vivian Stromberg, executive director of Madre,
an international women's rights organization
- Leslie Calman, deputy director of the NOW Legal
Defense and Education Fund, and former director
of the Center for Research on Women, moderator
"This
year, as the women's movement enters a new millennium,
we consider the changing geography of feminist politics,"
noted Jakobsen. In a world of shifting boundaries,
where national, ethnic, cultural, and sexual markers
are being constantly reimagined and redrawn, we
need to consider retiring the model of a unified
movement and, as Judith Butler insists, 'accept
divergence, breakage, splinter, and fragmentation
as part of the often tortuous process of democratization.'
