Greek
Games Return to Barnard
New
York, N.Y. – Under ideal spring weather, dozens
of students dressed in togas and laurel crowns congregated
on Lehman Lawn March 31 to join in the revival of
Barnard’s Greek Games.
The
games, which officially began with a torchlighting
ceremony on March 28, lasted five hours. Events
included hula hoop and frisbee games, tug-o-war,
relays, and competitions in which students made
togas from toilet paper.
One
of the new twists was a Greek Salad-making contest,
with points awarded by judges including Peter Juviler,
professor of political science, Dorothy Denburg,
dean of the College, and Karen Blank, dean of studies,
for such things as taste, proportion of ingredients,
presentation and teamwork.
"You
can pull people down, have fun, and get a free t-shirt
for doing it," Pat Chin-Sweeney ’03 said about
the afternoon.
Aramark
Dining Services contributed to the festivities by
serving barbecued hamburgers, turkey burgers, hot
dogs, baked beans, chicken and veggie burgers to
students, faculty, and staff on the lawn.
As
music poured from the speakers and students played
and ate on the lawn, a Barnard tradition which has
been dormant for 33 years was brought back to life.
