MATRIX
ART PROJECT TO PRESENT SLIDE SHOW AND LECTURE AT
BARNARD COLLEGE
April
5, 2000, New
York, N.Y. - The Visual Arts and History Departments
will host representatives of the Matrix Art Project
(MAP), presenting Pulse-Matrix Art Project 2000.
The slide show and lecture will be held on Monday,
April 24 from 4-6 PM in the Deanery at Barnard College
(117 & Broadway). Artists Emily Cantrell, Annemie
Maes, and Yuri Shimojo will introduce MAP and speak
about their careers as painters, photographers,
and film producers.

MAP,
a New York-based exhibition space with branches
in Paris and Brussels, was founded by Emily Cantrell,
Bili Bidjocka, and Jesus Polanco in 1995 with the
objective of collecting and promoting young contemporary
artists from all over the world. Its goal is to
establish a forum for dialogue between these artists
and the public through exhibition, lectures, and
special projects.
Emily
Cantrell, MAP director, will begin the presentation
by speaking about MAP's evolution and future projects.
A graduate of the University of Denver, Cantrell
specializes in artwork dealing with geography, movement,
and the passage of time. Using maps, calendars,
diagrams, and film sequences, she creates installations
using materials such as painted wood tiles, magnetic
digital images, and snapshots. Cantrell will show
slides of some of this recent work.
Belgian
Annemie Maes will present a video about her latest
work, The People Database, a multi-media collaboration
in which Maes has catalogued an extensive collection
of passport backflaps that are available by computer.
The People Database is "a global project, with an
emphasis on what is human-and not on what is a commodity
or an art object." This project allows the viewer
to reveal information about any of the catalogued
individuals and trigger "a memory, a sentiment,
a sensation, an emotion."
Yuri Shimojo will show slides of her work and speak
about her life as an illustrator, author, and artist
in Japan. She has done illustrations for organizations
such as Elle Japan, Sony, MTV Europe, and Mazda,
in addition to publishing two books, Crimson Fullmoon
and Tiny Scribble.
