BARNARD STUDENTS NAMED SUMMERBRIDGE 2000 SCHOLARS

RIVERDALE, NY, May 7, 2000 - Esther Kim and Susannah Jaffe have been named Summerbridge 2000 Scholars at the prestigious Riverdale Country School.

Ms. Kim, a sophomore from Elmhurst Queens was chosen, according to Executive Director, Dr. Cary Goodman, because, " She is both talented and enthusiastic about sharing her talents with younger students."

Susannah Jaffe, also a sophomore, is from Tampa, Florida. She is a dual degree student at Barnard and Jewish Theological Seminary.

" Susannah is smart and caring, " said Goodman. " I expect both Barnard students to be tremendously helpful to our newest seventh graders."

Kim and Jaffe will each teach for 3.5 hours per day and spend an additional hour working with a Mentor Teacher, someone with ten or more years of professional teaching experience. Mentor teachers observe these 'emerging teachers' for an hour each day and then discuss lesson plans, teaching strategies and assessment with their colleagues-to-be like Ms. Kim and Ms. Jaffe.

The Summerbridge program involves teaching highly-motivated, talented, junior high school students in a six-week, intensive academic program. Students are selected from the Bronx and Westchester and work for four hours each day in a writer's workshop, accelerated mathematics, vocabulary-building and reading in science, literature or social studies. In the afternoon students develop or explore talents such as modern dance, environmental photography, art and chess.

The goals of Summerbridge are to help place junior high school students into the top New York City high schools and to introduce college students to the art and science of teaching.

More than 115 college students applied to become Summerbridge 2000 scholars; only 10 faculty were chosen.
