Two
Barnard College athletes were named to All-Ivy League
teams- Laila Shetty '03 to the Women's Tennis First
Team and Sara Brubaker '00 to the All-Ivy Lacrosse
Second Team
May
25, 2000, New York, NY- Capping a banner year for
Barnard College athletics, two of its top ranked
athletes were named to All-Ivy League teams. The
students, Laila Shetty of the class of 2003 and
Sara Brubaker of the graduating class of 2000, were
leaders on their respective NCAA Division I teams.
Both the Tennis and Lacrosse teams are part of the
Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium. The All-Ivy
teams are chosen by a panel comprised of the head
coaches at each of the participating schools, who
select athletes based on outstanding performance
and leadership.
As
a midfielder on the Columbia-Barnard lacrosse team,
Sara Brubaker has long been an outstanding asset
to the Lions. In the last game of the season she
scored five goals - including the game winner with
just 2:33 remaining- to lead the light blue to a
9-8 triumph over Bucknell. Brubaker ends her career
with 61 career goals, one short of the school record
of 62 held by Katie Bergstrom.
She
is the first player in the four years of the varsity
lacrosse program to earn all-league honors, although
she has received honorable mention in the All-Ivy
selection twice before. Her success at Columbia
is only one in her long career as a student-athlete:
at Germantown Friends in Philadelphia Pennsylvania,
Brubaker was the captain of both the field hockey
and lacrosse teams. Along with other members of
the Class of 2003, Brubaker graduated from Barnard
College on May 16. She received a degree in English.
Celine
Cunningham, head coach for the Women's Lacrosse
team, said "I was really happy to see that," of
Brubaker's selection to the All-Ivy team. "As a
freshman she had just three wins after coming from
a very succesful high school program … I made it
a goal for our team to improve and she made that
goal on a personal level and she was a team leader."
Although
Laila Shetty has only been at Barnard College for
a single year, she is already making a powerful
contribution to the Lions tennis team. In a win
that capped a string of victories this season, she
won her final match against the University of Pennsylvania
this past month 6-3, 6-1. Despite her contribution,
the Lions fell 5-4 to Penn, just missing their first
winning season in history. Shetty is is only the
third individual to earn first team in tennis since
the program began in 1984. Her record is 17-4 in
dual matches singles and 5-2 in Ivy play. She was
4-1 at number one singles against Ivy opponents,
especially impressive for a first-year student.
While
this has been a banner year for the College, Barnard
has always prided itself on a strong athletic program.
Dean Dorothy Denburg points out that "Barnard is
the only college for women where students can play
on an NCAA Division 1 team, and obviously they're
taking full advantage of the opportunity."
