Barnard College Names Jennifer Gill Fondiller '88 Dean of Admissions

August 18, 2000, NEW YORK, N.Y. -

Jennifer Gill Fondiller, a member of Barnard's class of 1988, has been named Dean of Admissions at Barnard College following an extensive national search.

Dorothy Denburg, Dean of the College, said: "Ms. Fondiller will bring to the post a strong record of accomplishment at her previous positions, a deep commitment to and knowledge of Barnard, and an ability to bring together and effectively lead a strong team."

Denburg noted that at Eugene Lang College of New School University, where Fondiller was formerly director of admissions and associate dean for enrollment management, her contributions were wide-ranging and significant. In six years, she achieved a four-fold increase in applications, a 30 percentage point increase in selectivity, the expansion of Lang's Young Writers Conference that introduces high school juniors to the college, as well as the development of Lang's web site and award-winning marketing literature. She also built strong relations with faculty, other staff members, trustees, high schools, and prospective students.

Fondiller commented, "I am very excited to build on the momentum Barnard has achieved in attracting a dynamic and diverse student body. The College has a rich history of graduating highly successful women in every field. We need to make sure their accomplishments are widely known and that prospective students appreciate Barnard's unique strength."

Fondiller also previously served as an assistant dean of admissions at Wesleyan University; an academic adviser to the Council on International Educational Exchange in Berlin; as a college counselor at the John F. Kennedy High School in Berlin; and, after graduation from Barnard with a degree in French, as an admissions officer intern at Columbia College and a graduate assistant in our first-year residence hall. While in the latter two positions, she earned a Master of Arts in student personnel administration from Teachers College.

Barnard has enjoyed significant measurable progress in admissions over the past decade, with applications having more than doubled and selectivity at record levels. Fondiller replaces Doris Davis, admissions dean from 1989 to earlier this spring, who left to assume the newly created position of vice-provost for admissions and enrollment managaement at Cornell University.

Fondiller's appointment follows an extensive national search led by a committee of administrators, faculty, and students including Professors Jennie Kassanoff and Leslie Lessinger, Registrar Constance Brown, Director of Financial Aid Suzanne Guard, Vice President for Public Affairs Lucas Held, Dean for Multicultural Affairs Vivian Taylor, Umbreen Bhatti '00, Rebecca Cole '01, and Astrid Tsang '00.
