Internships

If you are interested in offering an internship to Barnard students, please look at our program guidelines below. For more information, contact internships@barnard.edu.

We recommend that students intern an average of 8 - 15 hours per week during the academic semesters. Although some students can be more flexible and offer a few more hours per week, please take into consideration their demanding academic schedules when structuring your internship. Of course, students can take on more hours or consider full-time internships during the summer and January intersession.

We strongly urge sponsors to provide students with a salary or stipend whenever possible. Many Barnard students cannot afford to accept a volunteer internship; even a modest stipend could make your internship a viable opportunity for these students.

If you would like to send us an internship description you may do so by emailing internships@barnard.edu. Please address all correspondence to the address at the bottom of this page.

Off-Campus Federal Work Study Jobs

**If you are a Barnard On Campus Employer, please post an On-Campus Job.**

All employers affiliated with the Barnard College Student Employment Program who are interested in offering a Federal Work Study position (FWS) to our students must complete a Federal Work Study Agency Agreement. All Columbia University employers and non-for-profit organizations should review the Student Employment Guidelines below for hiring student employees. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS ARE CONSIDERED OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT, and Barnard students must have a Federal Work Study award to work in these offices and get paid through Barnard. .

Jobs funded under the Federal Work Study program must be new or additional positions set up for the student to provide services otherwise not available for a non-profit organization performing work in the public interest. These positions are subsidized in part by the federal government. Barnard also participates in the America Reads and America Counts initiatives, in which students work as reading and math tutors in the local community.

All work-study employers posting a position will be sent a Barnard work-study packet containing additional guidelines, an agency agreement and information sheet which must be reviewed, completed, and returned to Career Development. You can also download and print this packet here using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Posting guidelines: Students may work a maximum of 15 hours per week; the recommended maximum for first-year students is 8-10 hours per week. Wage guidelines for on-campus jobs are available in Career Development. To post a job using the Job Request Form, contact the Career Development Front Desk at 854-2033.

On Campus (BCJ or FWS) Jobs

Students who are not on financial aid but who want to work on the Barnard campus may apply for jobs after the priority hiring period. Employers planning to re-hire students for the following academic year should contact the Associate Director/Student Employment during the spring semester.
