Career Development provides assistance in finding on- and off-campus part-time jobs for students. The Barnard College Job and Federal Work Study programs, both administered by the office, provide jobs for more than 900 students. There are many opportunities for employment on Barnard's campus: in academic and administrative departments, as lab assistants and library aides, and as desk attendants and lifeguards. Students who receive a Federal Work Study award may also work on Columbia's campus, in a variety of positions at off-campus, not-for-profit agencies, or as reading tutors for elementary-school children in the America Reads/America Counts program at Barnard.
In addition, Career Development advises three student-run agencies: Barnard Babysitting Service, Barnard Bartending Agency, and the Barnard Store, which provide excellent managerial experience and create jobs for many students.

USING YOUR AWARD
Many students receive either a Federal Work Study (FWS) or Barnard College Job (BCJ) Award as part of their financial aid package. All first-time award recipients must attend a student employment orientation before they use their job award. Sessions are held daily during New Student Orientation week; additional sessions are scheduled for the first week of classes during the Fall and Spring semesters. Students with Federal Work-Study Awards (FWS) are granted self-help awards based on their financial need. These awards are federally subsidized, and students may work on Barnard's campus, Columbia's campus or at a variety of not-for-profit agencies and institutions. Students may perform community service and/or participate in the America Reads/America Counts Challenge at Barnard, tutoring pre-k to elementary school children in reading or math, to earn their FWS Award.
Students with Barnard College Job Awards (BCJ) have been granted an amount of money to earn as part of their financial aid package. They may work only on the Barnard campus to earn the award.
Students who are not on financial aid but who simply want to work on the Barnard campus are eligible to do so after the Priority Hiring period ends. Priority Hiring at Barnard refers to a policy of hiring only financial aid award recipients before a given date in the fall semester.

FINDING A BCJ or FWS JOB
ONLINE JOB LISTINGS: On-campus and off-campus job listings are posted on our web page. Go to www.barnard.edu/ocd, select "Students" and then log into eRecruiting (use your full Barnard email as your username and password, and then change your password). Edit your student record to reflect your current interests. Select Jobs, then select See More Options at the top of the Jobs folder. Under Job Type you will be able to select on-campus (BCJ & FWS) and/or off-campus (FWS) jobs.
All students are encouraged to attend the annual Part-Time Jobs/Internship Fair, held during the second week of September. Representatives from both on-campus departments and off-campus agencies meet with students and provide information about job openings; some employers hire candidates on the spot!
Please note that not all on-campus jobs are listed with Career Development. If you are interested in working for a specific department or professor and do not see a listing, contact the department directly.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
A student must complete a separate contract for each department or agency for which she works. A new contract must be completed for summer employment or a second or third academic year in a department.
Students must complete an Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate (W-4) the first time they are employed on Barnard's campus, and each subsequent year if their withholdings change.
All student employees must also fill out an Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9). This form need only be completed the first time a student works through the Barnard Student Employment Program. Students must show certain forms of ID for the I-9 form, typically a U.S. passport (expired or unexpired) or Permanent Resident Card, or two IDs: a photo ID (driver's license or school ID) AND a Social Security Card or U.S. Birth Certificate. Contracts must be filled out correctly and completely and the W-4 and the I-9 must be received by Career Development before a student can be paid.
