FAT City Video Discussion with ODS LD Students

1. Discuss times when you experienced Frustration, Anxiety and Tension in any situation (social, academic). What are your tips for coping with F.A.T.? How does anxiety affect your performance?

 

2. Has a teacher ever ripped up a piece of your work (or someone else’s in the class)? Have you ever been the target of sarcasm?

 

3. Have you ever felt that your disability-related accommodation is “unfair” or gives you an unfair advantage? Do you feel that other students or professors might perceive your accommodation in a negative light?




4. While in a lecture, have you ever felt that things were moving at breakneck speed? Have you experienced difficulty with respect to: rapidly processing info; copying from the board; simultaneously trying to listen, take notes and formulate responses to questions?




5. Have you ever been hesitant to raise your hand in class, i.e. risk being incorrect? Are some subject areas more difficult than others with respect to classroom participation? What makes risk-taking easier—and how can profs help? How does a positive/negative classroom environment shape your ability to respond?



6. What tricks/devices do you use to help with recall?





7. Can you recall a time when reading, writing or speaking was easier/harder based on your background or fund/lack of information?




8. Give analogous situations to classroom experiences of frustration, anxiety or tension. For example: finding yourself lost in a foreign country; being asked to learn a new skill or sport you feel is in an area of weakness; being put on the spot to perform or recite… ODS 3/05
