A
College in New York
Going to college in New York makes available to students a
huge storehouse of cultural and intellectual riches. The city
is a vast museum, library, laboratory, theatre, workshop,
and employer. The best of everything is here, andthrough
Barnardstudents have access to it all.
The
City as Educator
With the citys great learning resources at hand, Barnards
faculty enrich courses by bringing experts to the classroom
and by taking students to nearby corporate headquarters, cultural
organizations, medical and science facilities, and government
agenciesthe institutions that set the pace for the rest
of the world. Courses in art history, for example, send students
to the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum
of Modern Art, and the galleries of SoHo.
"Barnards
campus security is excellent. I noticed
that during orientation, students learn
a great deal about travelling in the city
and about Barnards own security program.
Security staff members are visible on campus;
they come to know the students. All of this
is very reassuring for any parent."
-- Dr. Douglas Distefano, parent of a 1998
graduate
Students
gain valuable hands-on experience through Barnards extensive
internship
program. By the end of a students senior year, two-thirds
of her classmates have taken part in internships, choosing
from among the 2,500 the college offers in fields ranging
from politics to medicine to the arts. These experiences give
students insight into possible careersand a real edge
in the job market. Barnard students have interned at ABC-TV,
Brooklyn Academy of Music, J.P. Morgan, Merrill Lynch, New
York-Presbyterian Hospital, The New York Times, Sony,
and the United Nations, to name just a few.
In addition
to internships, Barnards Office
of Career Development arranges site visits, giving students
an insiders look at how some of the nations top
companies operate. Each year, Career Development brings to
campus dozens of employers nationwide to recruit students
nearing graduation. Barnards advisers also offer guidance
for the many students who plan on graduate or professional
school. In fact, Barnard ranks third among liberal-arts colleges
in graduates who earn a Ph.D.
The
Issue of Safety
New
York City has always been highly attractive to college students
for its cultural, social, and career opportunities. Today,
it ranks among the top cities for safety improvement. Yet
the issue of safety may still be a concern for some parents.
You may be reassured to know that Barnards neighborhood,
Morningside Heights, is essentially a university town. Students,
professors, and administrative staff of neighboring institutionsincluding
all of Columbia University, Jewish Theological Seminary, Union
Theological Seminary, and Manhattan School of Musicmake
up most of the pedestrian traffic. Many people who work, teach,
or learn in the neighborhood also live near Barnards
enclosed, four-acre, well-lit campus. The student-run nighttime
escort service offers an extra sense of security for Barnard
students, more than 90 percent of whom live in college-owned
housing with 24-hour security. Furthermore, all residence
halls require IDs for entrance, and security includes foot
patrol throughout the campus day and night.
