The
Provost and the Dean of the Faculty is the College's chief academic officer
and carries out responsibilities central to the
performance of the College's educational
mission. The Provost is responsible for the
development and administration of all
instructional programs, academic activities
and policies of the College. The Office of the
Provost oversees
forty academic departments
and programs, the
Barnard Information
Services, and the
Barnard Center for
Research on Women. The Provost
recommends to the President all nominations for
appointment to the Faculty, and develops and
implements the academic budget. The Provost is
also the academic
liaison with appropriate counterparts at
Columbia University,
and oversees and implements policies and programs related to faculty and
curricular
support.
Provost Elizabeth Boylan
As
a member of the President's Council, the Provost
participates in the formulation of College
policy. Faculty governance is another primary
responsibility of the Provost, who presides at
Faculty meetings and chairs the President's
Advisory Committee on Appointments, Tenure and
Promotion the Faculty Budget and Planning
Committee and the Faculty Grants Committee. In
addition, the Provost serves ex officio on the
Faculty Advisory Council, the Barnard
Library and Academic Information Services
Committee, the Committee on Instruction, and the Faculty Governance and
Procedures Committee, among others.
