CLASS OF 2012, NEW TRANSFER STUDENTS, AND VISITING STUDENTS

All students must REGISTER online and FILE PROGRAMS online. These are SEPARATE processes.

Þ Þ Þ Þ ONLINE REGISTRATION–FALL 2008Ü Ü Ü Ü

The dates for online registration are August 27 - September 3, around the clock. If you are unable to complete registration by September 3, you must come in person to the Registrar’s Office, 107 Milbank; there will be a (progressive) late fee after September 3.

You must register through eBear. You need a valid Barnard email login and password. If you do not know your Barnard email password, go to the Help Desk on the first floor of the Barnard library.

You must register from a computer on the Barnard or Columbia campus.

To register: Log into eBear. Select the blue Registration tab at the top (if you are not already on that page). Click on the green Registration on the navy blue title bar below the tabs. Click on the green Registration on the left. (You will be informed if you have holds that prevent you from registering. Click on the green Registration Holds on the left to see your holds and where you need to go to clear them.) You will then see a new screen, welcoming you to Online Registration. Click on the button at the bottom to begin registering. Use the buttons at the bottom of subsequent screens to move from form to form. The last screen will tell you that you have completed the process.

BARNARD IDENTIFICATION CARD. If you sent in a picture over the summer, your ID card is in your Orientation packet and is already validated. If you did not send in a photograph, you must go to the ID center in Kent Hall for your identification card.

(If we have no record of your having a Social Security number, a College-assigned number will be used. This number was sent to you over the summer. If you were assigned such a number and you do have a Social Security number or receive one later, please bring your card to the Registrar’s Office, 107 Milbank.)

MAILBOXES: EVERY STUDENT has a mailbox in Altschul. Your box number and combination are available on eBear. ALL MAIL (both United States and internal) will be distributed in Altschul. CHECK YOUR MAILBOX REGULARLY, particularly for official notices from the College.

ALL ACADEMIC CLASSES begin on Tuesday, September 2, and full attendance is expected from the outset although final program-filing may wait until your choice of courses is certain. Whether or not you have registered on time, you must file a program no later than 4:30 pm on Friday, September 12.

Þ Þ Þ Þ PROGRAM FILING--SEPTEMBER 2008Ü Ü Ü Ü

File your program on eBear. Read the onscreen messages.

What do students need to do before filing programs?

  • Take a language placement exam, if appropriate. Class of 2012, see memorandum attached to your program form. Transfers and visiting students go to the Registrar's Office or our web site for a list of exams, times, and places. Remember that if you do take a language placement exam, the resulting placement is final, and supersedes any other method of placement.

  • Follow special procedures for the following:

  • Voice lessons (Music BC1501). If you wish to take voice lessons, you must attend a tryout on Wednesday, September 3, or Thursday, September 4, starting at 6 pm in 405 Milbank. Pick up a form from, and return it to, 319 Milbank before the tryout. To qualify for a tryout, students must be able to teach themselves a song from a printed musical score.
  • Lessons at MSM or Juilliard. Students who have passed auditions at Juilliard or MSM must file a form (available at the Registrar’s Office) every semester by the program-filing deadline.
  • Columbia core courses. If you wish to enroll in one of the Columbia core courses (Humanities C1001 or C1002, or Contemporary Civilization C1101 or C1102), see Dean Blank, but be aware that very few spaces will be available.
  • L courses. Enrollment in limited courses (courses with a "maximum enrollment" listed on the online Directory of Classes) is done on eBear. Pay close attention to the information on the screen, including the appointment times for L signup.
  • JTS courses. If you plan to take a course at the Jewish Theological Seminary, see Dean Blank for the list of approved courses.(Register and pay tuition at JTS; do not include JTS courses on your Barnard program.)

  • Physical Education. First-year students who have been given priority for the PE lottery are guaranteed a place in some class but must enter the lottery. Transfers wishing to take PE, or first-years not given priority who wish to take a course, must enter the lottery. The PE lottery will take place on eBear from 9 am Wednesday, September 3, to noon on Friday, September 5. The results will be posted on eBear September 5 at 5 pm. PE classes begin on Monday, September 8. You must list any PE course, including a varsity sport, on your program.
  • Attend class. Consult the online DIRECTORY OF CLASSES for the location of your classes.
  • What deadlines and policies must students carefully heed?

    1. The program-filing deadline is Friday, September 12, at 4:30. You must enter your courses online, see your adviser, and have your adviser approve your program online by that deadline. First-year students who have made no changes to the programs set up for them over the summer MUST nonetheless see their advisers and have their advisers approve online.

Programs (and additions to programs) will be accepted after September 12 only if permission is secured from the Committee on Programs and Academic Standing. A<progressive fee is assessed for late programs and late changes to programs.

    2. A student who enters her courses but does not secure her adviser’s approval online will be charged a late fee as of the date she submits a printout signed by her adviser.

    3. There is no refund for courses (or for fees attached to courses) dropped after September 12

    4. No credit is granted for duplicate work: a repeated course or work repeated at the same level or work equivalent to AP credit. If we are granting AP credit, you can see it on eBear. Pay special attention to Math, Chemistry, and languages, and be sure not to enroll in courses that duplicate such AP credit.

    5. Variable-point courses. If you are taking such a course for more than the lowest number of points, you must come to the office and submit a form with the correct number of points.

    6. Note: Professor Applegate’s section of ASTR C1403 does not satisfy Barnard’s quantitative reasoning requirement.
