Residential Life & Housing

Services

Building Superintendents

The Building Superintendent (600, 616, 620, Plimpton, Cathedral Gardens and Elliott) is responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the building. Please submit any request for work to be completed via the Facilities web site at www.barnard.edu/facilities.  Emergency situations should be called in directly to the Facilities Services Office at 212-854-2041 or after hours to Public Safety at 212-854-3362.

Cleaning

The areas cleaned by students and/or by the Facilities staff differ in each area. Please check your area office for specific information pertaining to your residence hall. Kitchen cleanliness is always the responsibility of the residents. Ovens must be lined with foil and cleaned regularly. Please open a window when you use the oven, as smoke alarms are sensitive.

Computer Info

Any student living in Barnard housing can connect her personal computer to the Barnard network. Residential Computing Assistants are available to help with computer installations and network connections and to provide general computing support to students. Information about minimum hardware specifications necessary to ensure both a successful connection to the network and the ability to use the latest Internet and other applications is available on the Residential Computing web site or in the Lehman Computer Center, 112 Lehman Hall.

Four computer labs (open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week during the academic year) are located in the Quad (labs), Plimpton, and 616 W. 116th Street residence halls. All computers in the labs provide access to AT-supported software applications (word processing, spreadsheet and database programs) and to the Internet. Each lab also provides laser printing capability.

Exterminator

Exterminator requests should be brought to the attention of the Facilities Services department via the online work order system. Please be specific as to the location and nature of your request. Roaches and other insects thrive in most any environment, but particularly those that are dirty or cluttered. Taking out the trash, throwing away stacks of newspapers and/or cardboard, keeping food in airtight containers, and consistent cleaning will reduce the problem. Please remember that your cleanliness (or lack thereof) affects many other people in your suite and building. Students may NOT refuse entry into their room/suite for extermination purposes.

Front Desk Operations

The front desks in Barnard residence halls (the 600s, Sulzberger, Brooks, Elliott, Plimpton and CG) are there primarily for student safety and security.  While the front desk will accept flower deliveries, they are not permitted to accept package deliveries (with the exception of Cathedral Gardens), nor are they able to hold items left for you by friends or relatives.  If you are expecting someone to bring you something, you will need to coordinate a time when you, your roommate or a suitemate are home to accept the item.  The front desks can assist with:

  • Providing an emergency key to your room if you are locked out
  • Notifying you when flowers are delivered to the desk for you
  • Providing campus resource information
  • Assisting with your complete and proper check-in and check-out of the residence hall

Keys

If you lose your key or forget to bring it with you and need to get in to your suite/room, please do the following:

Lost Key: please go to the Residential Life & Housing office in 110 Sulzberger, and notify the staff that you lost your key(s). A replacement key will be provided to you at a cost of $25 per key. Students must present cash to receive a new key(s).

Locked Out? Residents can borrow a “temporary” key from the desk in their residence hall.  Students must present a valid form of ID to borrow a temporary key, and temporary keys can be in the student’s possession for no more than 15 minutes.

Duplication of keys is prohibited. If a student is found to have duplicated his/her key, a lock change will be ordered, and the student will be held accountable for the full cost of this lock change and all additional keys needed.  $100 for the lock change and 1 key and $25 for each additional key. Students are NOT permitted to give their room key to any other person to access their room.

Laundry Carts and Hand Trucks

These are available from the front desk during the first and last weeks of each semester by leaving your College ID and a $20 deposit. Students who exceed the one-hour time limit will forfeit their deposit and may incur additional fines.

Laundry Rooms

Each residence hall has laundry facilities. Washers and dryers are $1.25 each. All laundry facilities in College-owned buildings operate using a card system. New cards can be purchased at any laundry vending machine on campus (1 per building). We recommend that upperclass students hold on to their card from year to year so they do not have to pay for a new one each year. Please report any problems with washers and dryers to the front desk promptly.

Mail and Packages

These items are not accepted at your residence hall (with the exception of packages, which are accepted at Cathedral Gardens). All mail and packages should be addressed to your campus mailbox in Altschul. Flowers are the only deliveries that will be accepted at the front desk of your residence hall.  If students are expecting a delivery of prescribed medication that requires refrigeration, please speak to the Associate Director in your area to make the appropriate arrangements.

Music & Practice Rooms

There are music and practice rooms located in the Quad and in 616 W. 116th St. Sign up for time slots takes place in the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger) at the beginning of each semester.

Storage

Barnard College is unable to provide on-campus storage for students. Students wishing to store any belongings over the summer or while studying abroad should contact the Packing & Shipping Network (http://summerstorage.org). They offer such benefits as on-site pick-up and delivery of storage items, temperature-controlled facilities, and the ability to store items such as rugs, refrigerators, and electronics equipment. We recommend that students do NOT use College Boxes, Inc.  Many Barnard students have had great difficulty in getting their items safely picked up and returned by this vendor.

Toilet Paper

Toliet paper is available from the front desks of the following suite-style bulidings: 600, 616, 620, Cathedral Gardens, and Plimpton.
