Configuring Apple Mail for Your Barnard Email Account

Configuring your Apple Mail to receive your Barnard emails (or emails from other addresses) has never been easier. Follow this tutorial to learn how.

  1. Start Mail.app (you might also know it as Apple Mail). If this is the first time you are opening Mail.app, click "Continue" to setup an account. If you are not opening it for the first time, go to the Mail menu and choose "Preferences..." Go to the Accounts pane and click the "+" at the bottom left of the window to add an account.
  2. From the Account Type drop-down menu, select "IMAP." Give your Account a description, type in your Full Name, and type in your Barnard Email Address. When you are done, click "Continue."
  3. For the Incoming Mail Server, type "eclipse.barnard.edu". For User Name, give your Barnard user name and for your password, give your Barnard email/ebear password. When you are done, click "Continue."
  4. For the Outgoing Mail Server, type "smtp.barnard.edu". Check "Use Authentication" and for User Name, type in your Barnard ID and provide your Barnard password (depending on how you set up your accounts, this may or may not be the same as your UNI password). When you are done, click "Continue."
  5. Review your settings. If they are correct, click "Continue." The next window will ask if you want to import mailboxes from another email client (like Eudora or Thunderbird) or create a new account. To finish without importing mailboxes or creating another account, click "Done."
  6. Now check your account preferences. If you are not automatically presented with the Preferences window, go to the Mail menu and choose "Preferences..." then click on Accounts at the top of the window. This is where you can change the account Description or any other settings.

Problems Sending Email

Go to Preferences by clicking on the Mail menu and choose "Preferences..." Click on the Accounts tab and then check the outgoing server by clicking on "Server Settings..." near the bottom of the window. Your settings should match the ones illustrated below. The Outgoing Mail server is "smtp.barnard.edu". The server port should be set to 25 and "Use SSL" should be checked. Make sure that you are using your Barnard email/ebear password. To save your changes, click "OK" and then close the Preferences window and choose "Save."

Problems Receiving Email

Go to Preferences by clicking on the Mail menu and choose "Preferences..." Click on the Accounts tab double check that you have typed the Incoming Mail Server correctly. It should read "eclipse.barnard.edu". Click on the "Advanced" tab and make sure that the port is set to 993 and that "Use SSL" is also checked. To save your changes, close the Preferences window and choose "Save."
