HELP!!! I am Over E-mail Quota
Or
ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP-server.
You have exceeded your e-mail quota and
cannot delete anything in webmail. What is next?
By Eve Eichenholz
- Using SSH, check your quota.
- Start SSH.
- Use the quick connect button and enter the following info:

- Replace ab1234 with your Barnard user name.
- Enter password and log-in.
- At the dollar sign prompt $ type quota.
- "Blocks" is the amount of space you are using
- "Quota" is the soft limit. You might have started receiving e-mails that you were over quota.
- "Limit" is the hard quota. Webmail locks you out when you reach the limit.
- Use Pine to delete e-mail:
- Still in SSH type pine at the dollar prompt.
- Continue by logging-in again.
- If you get to your folders delete: trash, sent, and drafts until you are under quota.
We recommend blocks at around 70.
- If you cannot see folders in pine, install a client to get your e-mail off the server.
- Mozilla Thunderbird is available at www.getthunderbird.com.
These instructions are for how to configure Thunderbird, but you may use any client you want. Check the Resnet site for a specific Outlook Express guide.
- Download and install Thunderbird.
- Launch Thunderbird.
- Follow instructions to set up a new E-mail account:
- Enter name and E-mail, and click next.
- Choose IMAP and enter server information:

- Continue to end of set up.
- Thunderbird will try to access the account and will fail.

- Go to Tools: Account Settings to change the settings.
Server Settings, check the dot that says SSL.
Outgoing Server, double click on the server name and then check SSL.
- You should now be able to access your e-mails.
- Delete e-mails Tips and Tricks:
- It may take a long time to download all of your messages so be patient.
- There is an option in Server Settings that lets you delete e-mails right away rather than moving them to the Trash.
This will only affect Thunderbird, not webmail.
- Look in the Drafts and Sent folders first to try and clear up space.
- Sort e-mails by size. Click the column button above the scroll bar next to date and add size. Click size to sort by size.
- Move e-mails to a local folder if you are on your personal computer to get them off the server.
- Remember to go back to SSH to re-check your quota.
