Configuring Outlook 2003 for Your Barnard Email Account

In order to obtain Microsoft Outlook 2003 you must purchase Microsoft Office 2003. Outlook should install when you install Office.

  1. Start Outlook. The "Outlook 2003 Startup" screen should appear. Click "Next".
  2. You may be asked wheter you would like to upgrade an existing email program on your computer. Choose this option if you would like to import e-mail messages, address books, and settings from a program you have already used. Otherwise, select "Do not upgrade" and click "Next".
  3. The next screen asks whether you would like to configure an e-mail account. Select "Yes" and click "Next".
  4. For Server Type, choose "IMAP" and click "Next".
  5. Enter your name and Barnard e-mail address. The Incoming mail server (IMAP) should be eclipse.barnard.edu and the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) should be smtp.barnard.edu.
    Outlook will automatically fill in your User Name. We recommend that you do not enter your Logon Passwor for security purposes. Click "More Settings ..."
  6. In the "Internet E-mail Settings" window click on the "Outgoing Server" tab. Check the box next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Select "Log on Using" and fill in your Barnard email/ebear password.
  7. Click on the "Advanced" tab. Under Incoming Server (IMAP) check the box for "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)". Again, under Outgoing Server (SMTP) check the box for "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)". Under Folders: if there is content in the box after Root folder path, delete it; this box should be blank. Click "OK".
  8. Click "Next". You should reach the "Congratulations!" screen. Click "Finish". You have successfully set up your Barnard email account in Outlook 2003.
