Using Putty

Putty is a Telnet program for Windows. You can download it from CUIT.

  1. Once you have installed Putty, you can login and save your Barnard profile as follows:
  2. Start Putty by selecting Putty from the start menu. This should expand to three options, as Cunix and PINE are pre-configured for your Columbia account. To set up and log onto your Barnard account choose the third option "PuTTY" rather than Cunix or PINE.
  3. When you start PuTTY, the Configuration window shown below opens. Under Host Name (or IP address) type in eclipse.barnard.edu. Under Saved Sessions, give your session a name, such as 'eclipse telnet'. Click Save.
  4. The next time you log in, you can do so quickly by selecting the name of the session you saved under Saved Sessions and clicking Open.
    • The radio button next to SSH should be selected by default. If not, click on it and then click Open. The PuTTY Security Alert window will pop up if this is the first time you are logging in with this program. Click Yes to continue connecting.
    • Your telnet session will open in a new window called "eclipse.barnard.columbia.edu". Login with your Barnard username and password.
