Having Trouble Connecting to Secure Wireless?
If you can't connect to secure wireless, try these troubleshooting tips first.
Windows Vista and XP
- First, carefully follow the instructions for setting up secure wireless on
Vista or XP.
- Download SecureW2 correctly. Download using the top link on the SecureW2 website.
After downloading, make sure to extract all files. Then find the extracted files and run
the installer. You must reboot your computer before continuing to set up secure wireless.
- Update drivers. In Network Connections, right-click on the Wireless connection and select "Properties."
Click on the "Configure" button. In the next window, select the drivers tab and update the driver.
You can also look up your driver's manufacturer online and download updates from there.
- Disable all wireless devices that are not in use (e.g. Xbox).
- Allow Windows to manage your wireless. Turn off any additional clients that may have come with your
computer to manage your wireless. In XP, Right-click on the Wireless Connection in Network Connections.
In the Wireless Networks tab, make sure that "Use Windows to configure my wireless" is checked.
- Make sure that SecureW2 has been configured properly and that "Prompt user for credentials" has been checked
in the TTLS manager.
- Check power management settings to allow for wireless to work while on battery power.
Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)
- First, carefully follow the instructions
for setting up secure wireless on Leopard.
- Make sure you've run updates recently. Select "Software Update" from the Apple menu to run updates.
- Turn IPv6 off. Select "Network" in System Preferences. Select the Airport and click "Advanced."
Select the TCP/IP tab. Change IPv6 from "Automatic" to "Off."
- In the 802.1X tab, make sure that only one user profile has been created for
secure wireless. Click the triangle beside "User Profiles" to show all profiles.
If you still can't see any profiles, create one by following step five in the wireless instructions.
- Make sure that you are entering the correct password. Barnard students should use their UNI and eBear/Webmail password.
- Don't save your password in the keychain. This has caused problems in the past.
