Start Thunderbird. Click on "Create a New Account."
Select "Email Account" and press Next.
Fill in your name and Barnard address (ex. ab1234@barnard.edu) and press Next.
For "type of incoming server" select IMAP. Fill in the Barnard incoming server
address, which is eclipse.barnard.edu and the Barnard outgoing server address, which is smtp.barnard.edu.
Your incoming user name is your Barnard login (ex. ab1234). Your outgoing user name
is your Columbia UNI, which may or may not be the same as your Barnard login.
Choose a name for this email account and press Next.
You will see a summary of the information you have entered. Verify that this information
is correct and press Finish.
You have successfully set up your account, but you now need to secure your connection or you will
not be able to connect to the Barnard and Columbia email servers. Click on Tools from the menu
bar followed by Account Settings (as shown below).
In the Account Settings window click Server Settings.
In the Server Settings Window mark the circle next to SSL.
Click Advanced.
In the Advanced Account Settings window click on IMAP.
In the Advanced Account Settings window make sure that your settings look
like the picture below which are mostly default settings. If there is any entry
in the IMAP server directory: text box, delete it; this box should be blank.
Then click OK.
Back in the Account Settings window, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
Make sure "send.columbia.edu(Default)" is highlighted and then click Edit....
Verify that send.columbia.edu is the Server Name and that your Columbia UNI (NOT your Barnard ID!) is the User Name.
Check the box next to Use name and password
Mark the circle next to SSL. You will see the Port number change to 465. Click OK
