LANGUAGE COURSES

Our language courses comprise Elementary Spanish I and II (1101-1102) and Intermediate Spanish I and II (1201-1202).

Although, depending on previous language experience, students may place into the sequence at different stages (see [link to placement instructions]), the four courses are conceived as an integrated continuum leading students to the intermediate-high proficiency level.

Instruction is designed according to the latest analytical communicative methodologies, drawing especially from task-based language education and Spanish for specific (academic) purposes. Through the use of high-level authentic materials and state-of-the-art instructional technology, the sequence aims to combine the meticulous study of grammar with the acquisition of cultural literacy.

The small class size (15), in keeping with recommendations from the American Association of Departments of Foreign Languages, affords students ample opportunity for class participation, and allows instructors to pay careful attention to student writing, thus maximizing development in all four language skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Completion of 1202 constitutes completion of the Barnard language requirement. Additional sections of these courses are offered through the Columbia Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and all are open to Barnard students.
