Alfred Mac Adam has been a professor of Latin American literature at Barnard College-Columbia University since 1983. He previously taught at the University of Virginia, Yale University, and Princeton University. His area of specialization is 20th-century Latin American narrative, a subject on which he has published three books and numerous articles. His most recent book of criticism is Textual Confrontations: Essays in the Comparative Study of Latin American Literature (Univ. of Chicago Press). Mac Adam is also a translator of Latin American fiction and has translated novels by Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, José Donoso, Alejo Carpentier, Reinaldo Arenas, Juan Carlos Onetti, and Osvaldo Soriano. His translation of Julio Cortázar's Final Exam (New Directions) has recently been released as a paperback. His translation of Fernando Báez's Universal History of Book Destruction (Atlasbooks) will soon appear. Between 1984 and 2004, Mac Adam was the editor of Review: Latin American Literature and Arts, a publication of the Americas Society. This biannual magazine presents work by Latin American writers not yet known to English-speaking audiences as well as unknown texts by already established writers. |
