Javier Pérez-Zapatero received two BAs from the University of Granada (Spain), in Philology (1989), and in Translation and Interpreting (1993). He holds an MA in Linguistics and Teaching Methodology (1991) from the same institution. Besides his academic specialization in second language acquisition and translation studies, one of his areas of interest is cinema and its use in the Spanish classroom; in 1986 he completed a 3-year certificate program in Critique and History of Cinematography at the University of Valladolid.

In 1989 Prof. Pérez-Zapatero began his career as Lecturer of both Spanish as a Second Language and Translation and Interpreting at the University of Granada, where he designed courses such as “English-Spanish Translation for Learners of Spanish as a Second Language.” He also participated in the European Certificate of Modern Languages program. In 1992-93 he was Lecturer at the Language Department of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, before returning to teach at the UG, where between 1997 and 2001 he was also Coordinator of International Academic Programs. He has been Sworn Translator for the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2000.

Prof. Pérez-Zapatero moved to New York City in 2001. Before coming to Barnard, he taught at the United Nations International School and at the Calhoun School. At this institution he designed new syllabi for the Spanish Program, with special emphasis on Spanish through Content (Cinema, Cultural Studies) and Spanish as a Heritage Language. In 2004 and 2006 he was awarded grants to enhance the Spanish curriculum and methodology at Calhoun.

At Barnard, he has taught Elementary Spanish I and II (W1101-1102), Intermediate Spanish I and II(W1201-1202), and Advanced Language Through Content: Translating Cultures (W3300). Apart from his teaching duties, he is Study Abroad Advisor.
