Research and Teaching Interests

Paisley Currah's research focuses on the state constructions of legal sex, and challenges to those constructions. He has widely written on the legal status of transgender and gender nonconforming people in the US. In his current book project, The United States of Gender, (under contract with NYU Press), he looks at the contradictions produced when the "place of sex" comes up against the "time of gender" in sex designation cases. His teaching interests include sexuality, gender, queer and transgender studies; contemporary social and political theory; U.S. Constitutional law.
