Sometimes it is difficult to know whether
your drinking or drug use is problematic. If you are
drinking or using other drugs to the point that it interferes
with your friendships or romantic relationships, your
academic work, or daily functioning, you may have a
problem. Even if you only drink on weekends, it sounds
like you may be bingeing (three drinks in an evening
for women, four for men). If you are drinking to enjoy
the evening and to be sociable that's fine, but if you
are drinking to get drunk, that could be a problem.
Sometimes people use drugs or alcohol to self medicate
in an attempt to avoid feeling emotions. Here are some
signs that you may need to talk to someone about your
drinking and about your feelings:
Drinking more often and more drinks each time
Setting limits and breaking them
Experiencing blackouts
Drinking and using drugs together
Drinking and using drugs while alone
Lying about your drinking or using
Regretting things you have done or have been done to
you while drinking or using.
Sometimes students use illegally obtained prescription
drugs because they think it will improve their study
habits and focus their attention. This is a dangerous
habit to begin. While Adderall and Ritalin and similar
drugs may help a person focus at the moment they are
powerful stimulants. People often experience a crash
after using them and feelings of depression are not
uncommon.
If you continue to be concerned about your drinking
or drug use please talk to someone in the ASAP Office,
the Furman Counseling Center or Well-Woman. They are
all here to help, not to judge.
