The birth control pill is used for many things. Contraception is the main
use but physicians may also prescribe it to regulate periods or alleviate
heavy bleeding in some women. The pill is not, however, meant to be a mood
regulator, although it can help with some PMS symptoms.
If you experience major mood swings that go beyond the normal PMS symptoms it might be
a good idea to get a complete physical exam by a health care provider. Bring you concerns there and together
you can decide on your best course of action. Student Health Services is available at 4-2091.
No one should pressure you into taking the birth control pill for their own reasons. You
may want to take this opportunity to explore communication and relationship issues with your boyfriend. If you
don’t have a lot of experience addressing these issues, Counseling Services (4-2092) can offer you a
confidential space to be heard and supported until you have a better idea about what you want and need. In
the end, it is your choice to treat symptoms that you make you uncomfortable.
