I read in Cosmo once that there is as much protein in semen as in a pork chop. Is this true?

Rumors abound regarding semen and the health risks it may pose, especially when it comes to fellatio (oral stimulation of the penis) and the hotly debated question, “should I spit or swallow?” Typically, a male ejaculates one tablespoon of fluid, which contains about 10% sperm and 90% seminal fluid (comprised of simple sugars, protein, and small amounts of vitamins, minerals and hormones). The amount of protein found in seminal fluid is very small, and estimated at only about 6mg. Your standard three-ounce pork chop has about 24g, so I wouldn’t give up your beef and beans any time soon. Well-Woman has also received questions from students worried about the caloric content of male ejaculate. However, you won’t find more than 5-10 calories in one tablespoon of cum, so contrary to popular speculation swallowing is not going to make you fat. But more important than counting calories or measuring protein intake, you need to consider the risks of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) when engaging in unprotected oral sex. Using condoms dramatically decreases your chance of contracting an STI through oral sex. Ultimately though, there have been no studies that suggest that swallowing healthy, disease-free semen has detrimental affects to one’s health.
