By not using a condom during oral sex you
are putting yourself at risk for contracting HIV, gonorrhea in
your throat, chlamydia in your throat, herpes, and syphilis.
Gonorrhea may or may not give you symptoms, like a sore throat
or swollen glands. Chlamydia will most likely not result in
symptoms. Both of these infections are bacterial and can be
treated. Herpes results in cold sores on the lips , face, and
mouth. It is a viral infection, as is HIV, and cannot be
treated. Herpes is always contagious once you contract it.
Syphilis is a complex bacterial disease whose primary symptom,
a shanker sore, may or may not be recognized or noticed. It
can be treated if found early. All of these diseases are
common among sexually active people.
Without a condom, the only way you can
protect yourself is by abstinence.
For more information about the above
infections and for free condoms, you can contact Barnard
Health Services (LL Brooks, x42091) or the Well-Woman Office
(119 Reid, x43063).
