In order to make Sadomasochistic (SM) play
safe it is vital for all partners involved to be aware of
safer sex guidelines and to be consenting to the specific
activity. In situations where "no, please don't" or
the like can be a part of the fun, it is very important to
have a "safeword" which, when used, will stop all
play immediately.
In terms of disease prevention, some
important tips include:
- If a toy comes in contact with blood, vaginal fluids, or
semen, it must be washed (10% bleach, 90% water, followed
by soapy water.
- Hepatitis B is hard to kill especially on leather or
suede items. Make a visit to Health Services if you have
not yet been immunized against Hep B.
- For play piercing or cutting, be sure to clean the area
first, use sterile syringes, and soak all non-disposable
instruments in 50% bleach, 50% water.
- Activities such as bondage, spanking, psychological
domination, submission, ect. are STI-safe. For more
information, see http://www.stopaids.org/smsex.html and
check out Columbia's own BDSM discussion group, Conversio
Virium.
Remember that will all S&M activity
both partners must consent to each specific activity.
